BSU MLK Day of Greatness March and Rally

January 16, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us as we march to the capitol, as we support BSU students and staff at this great community MLK walk!

The 2017 event will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom.

Everyone is invited to make posters to carry down Capitol Boulevard to a rally on the Statehouse steps. Materials will be provided to make posters and student speakers will be featured at the rally.

A keynote address featuring broadcaster and author Tavis Smiley will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, in the Jordan Ballroom. Smiley is a journalist, political commentator and philanthropist who currently hosts Tavis Smiley on PBS. Smiley is a researcher of Dr. King’s life and legacy, and is the author of “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year.  He is the recipient of 16 honorary doctorates and is the founder of the Tavis Smiley Foundation, which funds programs that develop young leaders in their communities.

Martin Luther King Jr. March and Rally 2016

The purpose of the annual celebration is to evoke in students — in everyone — a passion for human rights, and to use Dr. King’s example of positive change while respecting others’ unique individuality and beliefs. One of the best ways to celebrate Dr. King’s contributions is to reflect on how his work has impacted your own life, and consider how you too can improve the lives of others within your community and worldwide.
